Stunning Beaches
Mayar Bhan is close to many outstanding beaches. Mellon Udrigle and Little Gruinard are both just 10 minutes drive from the house and both utterly fantastic. They face different directions so one is generally more sheltered than the other. Little Gruinard is very shallow a long way out so the water gets a lot warmer on sunny days. The main beach in Gairloch is below the golf course plus Big Sands beach is also good but there are others to explore.
Buckets, spades, boogie boards, wetsuits, kites etc can be purchased at Crocodile Creek on the Gairloch waterfront or at the Sands Caravan Park.
Inverewe Gardens
Discover the story of a father and daughter who created Inverewe Gardens, amid a barren wilderness on the Atlantic coast in the North West Highlands.
Explore the garden of experimentation and wonder at the calendar of colour and scents, cultivated with care … and a hefty dose of creativity.
Boat Trips
We have done the Shellfish Safaris and the Hebridean Whale Cruises, both of which we would recommend.
On Shellfish Safaris you get to see the wildlife in the bay and local history from Ian. The kids can handle the crabs, starfish, langoustines etc and steer the boat.
On our Hebridean Whale Cruise we saw minke whale and dolphins. The ticket price was more than covered by the look on our eight year daughters face when the dolphins appeared round the boat.
We would also recommend Gairloch Marine Wildlife Centre and Cruises.
Walking
There are many walks around Mayar Bhan to suit all energy levels and abilities. All walks and trails offer amazing views and breathtaking landscapes.

Wildlife Watching
White-Tailed Eagles, also known as Sea Eagles, can often spotted at the end of the road above the cliffs.
There is potential of seeing whales and dolphins for free from the hill above Mellon Udrigle beach, which is 4 miles from the house.
Lots of deer and seals can also be seen.
Pony Trekking
Pony trekking is available on the beautiful Red Point beaches, with breath-taking scenery all round.
Gairloch Trekking Centre has a great selection of well mannered native horses and ponies to suit all ages and abilities.
The trekking centre operates to a very high standard with friendly knowledgeable qualified staff.
Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve
Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve is in the heart of Wester Ross. The mountains, seas and lochs in this part of Scotland are some of the finest in the world. Nature is all around you here, so take some time to enjoy this magical place.
For visitors who would like to find out more about the reserve, there’s a visitor centre open from April to October just outside Kinlochewe. The three trails which start here are open all year and a further path links the visitor centre with the village of Kinlochewe.
Swimming
As well as enjoying a bracing dip in the sea, a good rainy day option is Poolewe Swimming Pool, which is just a short drive from Mayar Bhan.
